Mountain Views with Signature Windows + Doors

For Laura's Snowmass home, the windows were an integral part of the renovation design. Given the location of Mountain Lane, it was critical that we select a product that both allowed for expansive views of the mountains but was also energy-efficient. With so many considerations, we were highly selective with our window partner.

Enter, Signature Windows + Doors, experts in energy efficiency and high design. Whether it's new construction, remodeling projects, or choosing replacement windows and doors for historical renovations, Signature Windows + Doors never takes shortcuts and always adheres to the highest service levels. We sat down with them to learn more about their ethos and the top things homeowners need to keep in mind when selecting new windows.

A CONVERSATION WITH SIGNATURE WINDOWS + DOORS

Laura U Design Collective (LUDC): The expansive views of the Continental Divide are one of the major reasons Laura purchased Mountain Lane. The first order of business was to optimize that view! The home originally had arch shaped windows that cut into the landscape. Our team opened them up with a new steel moment frame to follow the roof line, better capturing the amazing view. Can you tell us about the design of the large window system Laura selected for the Great Room?

Signature Windows + Doors (SWD): The Great Room features Marvin’s Signature clad collection. The roofline is accentuated with three fixed windows that mirror the peaked roof. This is an effective way to add more glass without sacrificing performance. Below the fixed windows, the view is unobstructed and the central focus with an expansive fixed window in the middle, flanked by two swing doors that add balance and functionality. We love this design because it maximizes the view while also driving the thoughtful design showcased throughout the home.

LUDC: Given the location of the home and cold winters, it was essential for the windows to help retain heat. Can you talk to us about how Marvin products are created to be energy efficient?

SWD: We pride ourselves on only selling best-in-class products. Marvin provides beautifully designed products that perform over time. As a preferred Marvin dealer, we confidently sell and install their products throughout Colorado. Marvin’s Ultimate Clad line uses high-quality wood that provides excellent insulation. Their insulated glass units are glazed with a Low-E coating reflecting infrared and ultraviolet light. The Low-E coating keeps the outside heat from entering the home during the summer. In the winter, this coating helps keep heat from escaping the home.

LUDC: In addition, the home does not have central AC (such a strange thing to hear for us Houstonians!), so for the summer the windows will be opened to cool the home. How do you work with clients to customize windows to fit their specific needs?

SWD: We take a consultative approach with all of our clients, ensuring that we understand their needs, wants, and how they’ll interact with their home. Product selection requires us to tease out how each room will be used and what the homeowner wants to feel in the space. The products should reflect how you’re going to live in the space; Marvin’s wide array of products can be customized to suit every room. Large awnings above a kitchen sink allow an unobstructed view and ventilation. A product like Skycove immediately extends your space, brings in the outdoors, and creates a reading nook that’s Instagram-worthy.

LUDC: All the windows Laura selected are from your Ultimate Clad collection. What are the major differences between your collections?

SWD: Marvin’s collections offer a range of products organized by degree of design detail, flexibility, and customization possibilities. Beautiful design and superior quality are throughlines that unite all of them. Marvin provides window and door solutions in various styles and materials, making it possible to complement any design aesthetic. Marvin’s products can span the gap between a historic restoration in Denver Country Club and a minimalist Japandi-inspired new build in Aspen.

LUDC: With people spending more time at home, have you seen a change in the types of window systems people are requesting?

SWD: Form follows function. The functionality of windows and doors changes as we change. Over the last years, we’ve seen increased requests for large door openings that allow the outside in. We’ve seen a strong trend in kitchen pass-through (servery) windows. This is a must-have for homeowners hosting al fresco.

LUDC: When going to select new windows, what are the top things for homeowners to keep in mind?

SWD: Take your time in making your decisions and choose a trusted partner. When you work with the right company, they will take the time to dial in the details. When you order custom-made to-order products, it requires a deliberate and detailed approach.

The other recommendation I have is window shop, literally. When walking through a neighborhood, pay attention to what you like and don’t like aesthetically. Save photos from Instagram, Pinterest, and magazines. Then when it comes time to select your windows and doors, you’ll have a great starting point when you start the consultation process.
