A CONVERSATION WITH PARAGON Systems Integration

Laura U Design Collective (LUDC): Laura, Michael, and the girls are so excited for all the AV functionality that is going into the Mountain Lane Show House (MLSH). Can you talk to us about the residential options you offer, specifically regarding automation design and integration?

Paragon Systems Integration (PSI): Paragon offers start to finish (and beyond) services including system design, prewire services, system installation, programming, lighting/shade control, HVAC integration, lighting design & fixture deployment as well as 24/7 after system completion service and support. Paragon focuses on early project system design to make sure all elements are specified based on the needs of the project and the client. Working with the overall team and focusing on project management throughout the project allows the design to become a reality.

LUDC: At what stage of the renovation or building process is best for planning for the AV needs?

PSI: For us, the earlier the better. This allows for early conversations about overall functionality, preferred products, desired client interface, and touch points. Many systems and scope items that we work on need to work into structure and integrate with other build related items that are selected usually very early in project development.

LUDC: There is so much work that happens that the end user doesn't see when it comes to your services. You fabricate off-site and a lot of what is installed is hidden by sheetrock, etc. Tell us about your process and how the magic happens!

PSI: With everything that we do, the key is consistency, testing, and repeatability. By designing systems, testing hardware devices, and confirming programming, all off site, allows us to have very simple deployments in the field when we are doing final installations. We try and keep our systems and designs similar from residence to residence while also understanding that each project is custom and unique.

LUDC: Your technology solutions make homes safe, elegant, and easy to use. What products are being installed in MLSH?

PSI: MLSH uses a simple Crestron Home interface that allows the control of TV's, music, lighting scenes, and can also control other sub systems such as HVAC, security, shading, and pool/spa as the residence evolves over time. MLSH also has simple secure voice control of lighting control scenes and music to allow a hands-free approach to basic controls. The design focused on the overall clean cosmetics of the house design and pushed us to install clean and in some cases invisible elements in the house.

LUDC: You also work with lighting design. What is important for homeowners to know about selecting voltage and color?

PSI: Lighting design is all about providing lighting elements to make the residence functional for every type of use (family time, events, evening, and so on) while making the lighting fixtures and keypads blend seamlessly with the design and architecture of the house. The best lighting designs are honestly the ones that no one notices. They deliver on the needs of the client and the project while just blending in. Fixture types and styles have changed dramatically over the recent years by adding level, temperature, color, intensity, and other types of control. You can use low voltage lighting elements that allow you to switch the functionality of lights and change the design on the fly as the house changes over time. If art moves from one wall to another, the lighting load for your art can move as well with just a few keystrokes. The important thing is talking through what's available early on and the most important thing is experiencing it. Paragon's Aspen showroom has a full array of lighting fixtures with the ability to show all elements and experiences. It's a must see!

LUDC: Do you have any advice for people wanting to install smart technology solutions into their home? What is the one thing you recommend to all homeowners?

PSI: Keep things simple. With saying that, simple does not define a system, price point or type of design. Simple is defined by providing a system and design to our clients to satisfy their needs, wants, and lifestyle without adding complication. Most of what we do now focuses on the cosmetics and final look and feel of the products so make sure this is discussed and reviewed early in a project.

LUDC: How can people get in contact with Paragon?
